General Reaction Patterns
Master these "Master Formulas" to predict any product in the exam.
1. Acid + Base (Neutralization)
Acid + Base → Salt + Water
- Example: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
- Key: H⁺ ions from acid and OH⁻ ions from base combine to form H₂O.
2. Acid + Metal
Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen Gas (H₂)
- Example: Zn + H₂SO₄ → ZnSO₄ + H₂
- Observation: Brisk effervescence; gas burns with a 'pop' sound.
3. Metal Carbonate + Acid
Metal Carbonate + Acid → Salt + CO₂ + H₂O
- Example: Na₂CO₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H₂O + CO₂
- Test: CO₂ turns lime water milky.
4. Metal Oxide + Water
Metal Oxide + Water → Metal Hydroxide (Base)
- Example: CaO (Quick lime) + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ (Slaked lime)
- Nature: Metal oxides are generally basic.
